{"id":10453,"date":"2012-03-13T23:13:15","date_gmt":"2012-03-13T23:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/?p=10453"},"modified":"2012-03-13T23:13:15","modified_gmt":"2012-03-13T23:13:15","slug":"vale-ivan-sinnaeve-shrapnel-charlie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/?p=10453","title":{"rendered":"VALE &#8211; Ivan Sinnaeve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Ivan Sinnaeve<br \/>\n\u2018Shrapnel Charlie\u2019<br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/md-cpanel04.websiteactive.com\/~ffff1111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Ivan-Sinnaeve-and-his-Digger_website.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10472\" title=\"Ivan Sinnaeve and his Digger_website\" src=\"http:\/\/md-cpanel04.websiteactive.com\/~ffff1111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Ivan-Sinnaeve-and-his-Digger_website.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On behalf of the committee and members of Families and Friends of the First AIF, I express condolences to Marie Claire Sinnaeve, her family and friends on the loss of\u00a0her dear husband, Ivan, at the age of 58 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/md-cpanel04.websiteactive.com\/~ffff1111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Ivan-Sinnaeve_website.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-10488\" title=\"Ivan Sinnaeve_website\" src=\"http:\/\/md-cpanel04.websiteactive.com\/~ffff1111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Ivan-Sinnaeve_website-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Ivan passed away on Tuesday 13 March 2012. He had been in poor health for considerable time and although he fought every inch of the way, never managed to recover after surgery in February.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Claire wishes to thank all who sent cards and letters of support during Ivan\u2019s illness. She said it was really heart warming and encouraging to receive such a large volume of mail which helped them through the hard weeks of post-surgery attendance. Knowing they were not alone and that a lot of people were thinking of them really helped.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/md-cpanel04.websiteactive.com\/~ffff1111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Ivan-at-Last-Post-Service_website.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-10481\" title=\"Ivan at Last Post Service_website\" src=\"http:\/\/md-cpanel04.websiteactive.com\/~ffff1111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Ivan-at-Last-Post-Service_website-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ivan\u2019s loss to the wider community is considerable and those of us who were privileged to meet him and be presented with a soldier,\u00a0will never forget his warm friendship and generous disposition.<\/p>\n<p>We can celebrate that Ivan came close to achieving the fifty-five thousand \u2018soldiers\u2019 he set out to make; one for each name on the Menin Gate. The soldiers he moulded were made with the lead from World War I shrapnel shells found on the former battlefields of the Ypres Salient in Belgium.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/md-cpanel04.websiteactive.com\/~ffff1111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2009-09-19-Shrapnel-Charlie-01_website.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10484\" title=\"2009 09 19 Shrapnel Charlie 01_website\" src=\"http:\/\/md-cpanel04.websiteactive.com\/~ffff1111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/2009-09-19-Shrapnel-Charlie-01_website.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The card that accompanied each soldier states:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cThe lead that once killed soldiers is now moulded into new soldiers who can travel back to their home countries to tell people never to forget what happened here in the past and to bring a message of peace\u201d \u2013 this is the motivation of Ivan \u2018Shrapnel Charlie\u2019 Sinnaeve, the man who created these figures.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/md-cpanel04.websiteactive.com\/~ffff1111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Le-Hamel-Memorial-and-Ivans-Battalion.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10457\" title=\"Le Hamel Memorial and Ivan's Battalion\" src=\"http:\/\/md-cpanel04.websiteactive.com\/~ffff1111\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Le-Hamel-Memorial-and-Ivans-Battalion.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our thoughts at this sad time are with Marie Claire and her family, their friends and members of the\u00a0\u2018extended families\u2019 of World War I soldiers who were touched by Ivan\u2019s sentiment.
