It is the only Australian Divisional Memorial which has changed since it was erected. The memorial originally featured atop its large marble plinth a Digger symbolically bayoneting a German eagle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/about\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Laffin<\/a>, in his book, <em>Guide to Australian Battlefields of the Western Front 1916-1918<\/em> describes how the change came about: \u2018Germans who occupied France during the Second World War were affronted by the Digger and his dying eagle and removed them. They have not been seen since.
