He was aged 17 when he enlisted in the 2<sup><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">nd<\/span><\/sup> AIF during the Second World War. He learnt Japanese and on the cessation of hostilities was sent overseas and took some of the surrenders. He also did some of the war crimes investigations and interpreted at some of the war trials. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">His military career included service in Vietnam and later command of the 2<sup><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">nd<\/span><\/sup> Division. At the time of his retirement from the Army, Gordon was Chief of Reserves at Army Headquarters and a member of the Chief of Army\u2019s Advisory Council. Post military, Gordon served as CEO of The Royal Agricultural Society, on various NSW Government Committees and as Chief Manager of the Commonwealth Bank. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the past 3 decades, Gordon has devoted his life to commemorative and community activities, particularly assisting veterans and their organisations, a number of which he has led. [Alan Kitchen]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gordon was a Foundation Member of FFFAIF (Member 20) and our most senior retired military officer. Gordon has been an authoritative historian and author with the assistance of his late wife Dorothy has had 6 books published. This was followed by a by Military\u00a0Procession along\u00a0Phillip\u00a0St with a Tribute\u00a0Ceremony at\u00a0the Cenotaph, Martin\u00a0Place, concluding\u00a0with\u00a0a reception at The\u00a0Westin Hotel, Sydney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Those participating in the service included:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Officiant\u2019s:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Rev Andrew Sempell, Rector of St James<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Rev Robert Sutherland, CSC, Chaplain, Australian Army<br \/>\nT<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">he Rev the Honourable Fred Nile, ED, MLC<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">T<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">he eulogy was delivered by Major General The Honourable Paul Brereton, AM RFD, Judge of the NSW Court of Appeal, <\/span>honorary Colonel Commandant of the Royal NSW Regiment and the University of NSW Regiment, and Assistant Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force.<\/p>\n<p>Pipers of Sydney\u2019s Thistle Highland Pipe Band played a Scottish Tribute<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reflections were given by Gordon\u2019s daughters, Barbara Hodges and Elizabeth Charman and the grandchildren.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Readings were led by:<br \/>\nH<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley, AC, DSC, (Rtd), Governor of New South Wales<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie, AC, DSC, CSM<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The poem \u201cKokoda Pilgrimage\u201d written by Gordon was read by 97 years-old Dick Payten OAM, President of the 7th Division Association and a Kokoda veteran.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The 4th Battalion Royal New South Wales Regiment Colours were marched into the service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Choir of St James, Director of Music, Organist and Altar Servers assisted in the service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Piper Graham Wood played the recessional piece as the Maitland family and dignitaries left the church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The following photos show the Thistle Highland Pipe Band, for first time in public, played the Fromelles lament,\u00a0commissioned by Gordon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span>FFFAIF member Darren Mitchell significantly supported the Maitland family in the organisation and conduct of the funeral service and Cenotaph Ceremony of
