{"id":1381,"date":"2008-09-30T22:30:15","date_gmt":"2008-09-30T11:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/?p=1381"},"modified":"2008-09-30T22:30:15","modified_gmt":"2008-09-30T11:30:15","slug":"re-dedication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/?p=1381","title":{"rendered":"*Re-dedication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The final resting place of the\u00a0recently\u00a0identified member of the \u2018Zonnebeke Five&#8217;, Private Storey, was\u00a0re-dedicated yesterday\u00a0with the unveiling of a new headstone.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of the identity of Private Storey was featured in August RECENT NEWS item,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/2008\/08\/20\/3-out-5-zonnebeke\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>3 out of 5 @ Zonnebeke<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/08\/zonnebeke-5_graves.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1081\" title=\"zonnebeke-5_graves\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/08\/zonnebeke-5_graves.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">Photo: \u2018Zonnebeke 5&#8242;\u00a0graves, Buttes New British Cemetery, Belgium &#8211; May 2008<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Government&#8217;s Department of Defence Media release gives these details of the service:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>RE-DEDICATION OF HEADSTONE FOR AUSTRALIAN WWI SOLDIER BURIED IN BELGIUM: PRIVATE STOREY IDENTITY CONFIRMED<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WHO:<\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Relatives of the late Private George Storey, including his two nephews Geoffrey and David Storey; Australian Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon Warren Snowdon MP; Senior Army Representative, Major General Mike O&#8217;Brien.<br \/>\n<strong>WHAT:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Re-dedication of Private Storey&#8217;s headstone, which currently reads \u2018Known unto God&#8217;.<br \/>\n<strong>WHERE:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Buttes New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood, Belgium<br \/>\n<strong>WHEN:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>2.45pm for 3pm start, Tuesday 30 September 2008\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In October 2007, the remains of five Australian soldiers who fell during the Battle of Polygon Wood in 1917 were re-interred in a moving ceremony with full-military honours at the Buttes New British Cemetery, Belgium.\u00a0 The remains of these soldiers were discovered in 2006 during excavation works near the village of Westhoek.<br \/>\nPrior to burial, DNA matching was able to confirm the identity of two of those soldiers; Private John Hunter and Sergeant George Calder.\u00a0 The remaining three soldiers were interred under individual headstones marked \u2018Known unto God&#8217;.\u00a0 However, their DNA profiles were retained in the hope that a future match may provide the necessary evidence to confirm their identities.<br \/>\nAdvances in DNA technology resulted last month in the confirmation of the identity of Private George Richard Storey.\u00a0 He was killed in action on 30 September 1917, and 91 years later members of Private Storey&#8217;s family, along with the Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, will witness the re-dedication of his headstone in a short graveside ceremony.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The final resting place of the\u00a0recently\u00a0identified member of the \u2018Zonnebeke Five&#8217;, Private Storey, was\u00a0re-dedicated yesterday\u00a0with the unveiling of a new headstone.
