{"id":1931,"date":"2008-11-26T00:01:51","date_gmt":"2008-11-25T13:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/?p=1931"},"modified":"2008-11-26T00:01:51","modified_gmt":"2008-11-25T13:01:51","slug":"1111-in-belgium1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/?p=1931","title":{"rendered":"*11\/11 in Belgium:1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><em>FFFAIF<\/em> member Johan Durnez shares his account of Remembrance Day commemorations in Belgium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Members of the Leggett Family had travelled from Australia to join Johan and other locals from Geluwe\u00a0 on the 90th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice to pay tribute to William Leggett, who was amongst the first of more than fifteen thousand Australians who died in the battles of Ypres.\u00a0(For details on Corporal of Horse, W. Leggett see RECENT NEWS item:<\/span> <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/2008\/10\/14\/first-aussie-casualty\/\" target=\"_blank\">1<sup>st<\/sup> Aussie Casualty on Western Front<\/a><\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Johan describes the commemorations:<br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#333333;\">William Leggett died in Geluwe and he is buried now in the Harlebeke New British Cemetery in Harelbeke (about 30 kilometers east of Geluwe), so we decided to have two commemorations: one in Geluwe at the Leggett Memorial on Monday 10 November and one in Harelbeke on Remembrance Day.<br \/>\nThe weather was kind to us as it stopped raining for the time of the commemoration !\u00a0 But it was cloudy, windy and cold (what you can expect for November, of course !)\u00a0 The commemoration happened at the William Leggett memorial at the church of Geluwe and was followed by a function at the old town hall.<br \/>\nWe were welcomed by a girl who played a tune on the Flemish bagpipe&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-110.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1932  aligncenter\" title=\"photo-110\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-110.jpg\" alt=\"photo-110\" width=\"448\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\">As you can see on the photos below, we did not only have the Leggett family as our Australian guests, but also Bill Hourigan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1933\" title=\"photo-21\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-21.jpg\" alt=\"photo-21\" width=\"160\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\">Grace Leggett read a text in which she mentioned the both memorials (the one in Geluwe and the one in Goulburn.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1934\" title=\"photo-31\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-31.jpg\" alt=\"photo-31\" width=\"336\" height=\"387\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">More photos of the service can be seen on t<span style=\"color:#000000;\">he Belgium website<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wo1.be\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <em>The <\/em><\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wo1.be\/\" target=\"_blank\">great war in Flanders Fields &#8211; A war and peace experience<\/a> <\/em><\/span>. The photos of this presentation appear at the end of the collection of those shown on the website above.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Johan takes up the story<\/span>:<br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#333333;\">Finally, the Leggett family was given a special souvenir by an old local. The man who offered it is the last surviving of the local Armed Resistance (Secret Army, you can say) who fought in World War II against the German occupiers.\u00a0\u00a0 The man had never heard of quarantine rules in Australia, had never heard of the strict rules on taking ammunition on board of an aeroplane, but what he offered came from the bottom of his heart and his tears were not faked at all.\u00a0 It was his way to show his great appreciation for what people from the other side of the globe had done. Not only in 1914-1918, but also in 1939-1945 : they came over to fight here for our freedom.
