{"id":1942,"date":"2008-11-26T00:00:29","date_gmt":"2008-11-25T13:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/?p=1942"},"modified":"2008-11-26T00:00:29","modified_gmt":"2008-11-25T13:00:29","slug":"1111-in-belgium2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/?p=1942","title":{"rendered":"*11\/11 in Belgium:2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">FFFAIF Belgium member Johan Durnez continues his report on &#8216;a wonderful and emotional Remembrance Day 2008&#8217;, which included the spontaneous presentation of &#8216;a warm scarf for greatgreatuncle Will&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Johan says:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#333333;\">In the night of 10-11 November we had lots of rain and there was also a very strong wind. The weather forecast promised that it would stop raining in the morning and&#8230; yes, this turned out to be right!\u00a0 The clouds opened and we got some sun but the wind\u00a0was still strong.\u00a0 As you can see on this picture it was pretty cold!<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-41.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1943\" title=\"photo-41\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-41.jpg\" alt=\"photo-41\" width=\"448\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\">We were happy to welcome\u00a0at least\u00a050 people who attended our service.\u00a0 Among them the Mayor and Aldermen of the town Harelbeke, members of the town council, a fine delegation of the local fire brigade and police, patriotic associations and their standard bearers,\u00a0the representative of the Australian Embassy Mr Allen Bryce, agriculture counsellor, and his wife Niki Francis who would lead in prayers as a Minister of the Uniting Church in Australia.\u00a0 And of course there were also several of our colleagues from school\u00a0who had already attended many of the ceremonies we have had on this cemetery. We were also pleased to see that some of them brought their sons and daughters with them for the first time. I was really pleased to see that even some of my students turned up !\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#333333;\">And of course, there were the Leggett relatives and their host family for these days, our very good friends Dirk and Mieke Decuypere-Denys. (Dirk was the man who did the research on William Leggett and, who was, together with me, the initiator of the Leggett Memorial in Geluwe.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-52.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1945\" title=\"photo-52\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-52.jpg\" alt=\"photo-52\" width=\"382\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\">On the left : Tim and\u00a0Catherine Leggett, Hamish and Grace<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#333333;\">on the right : Mieke and Dirk Decuypere-Denys<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\">I once more had the honour to be the master of ceremonies of this service.\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color:#333333;\">This year we started with a prayer over the graves by Reverend Niki and then we had the official wreath laying by the Mayor of Harelbeke\u00a0 Mrs Rita Beyaert. (The town authorities always place their wreath at the Cross of Sacrifice as on Remembrance Day they want to pay tribute to all the men who are buried in this cemetery.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-61.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1946\" title=\"photo-61\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-61.jpg\" alt=\"photo-61\" width=\"336\" height=\"380\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-71.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1947\" title=\"photo-71\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-71.jpg\" alt=\"photo-71\" width=\"448\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#333333;\">Then we had Last Post &#8211; silence &#8211; Ode &#8230;&#8230;&#8230;After that, Grace Leggett (19) and her\u00a0young brother Hamish (9) read a eulogy for their great great uncle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-81.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1948\" title=\"photo-81\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-81.jpg\" alt=\"photo-81\" width=\"425\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\">After the eulogy, we all went to the grave of William Leggett.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#333333;\">Flowers were presented on behalf of the Australian Embassy (&#8220;From the People and Government of Australia&#8221; said the ribbon.) This wreath was made in green and gold colours and had the big chrysanthemum balls (which\u00a0in Belgium is\u00a0a typical flower to honour the dead).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-8a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1949\" title=\"photo-8a\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-8a.jpg\" alt=\"photo-8a\" width=\"375\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\">The other wreath had flowers in blue and red, the colours of Leggett&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Guards Division<\/em>.\u00a0 The Australian wreath was laid by Tim Leggett and Allen Bryce, the other wreath was laid by Hamish and Grace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-91.jpg\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1950  aligncenter\" title=\"photo-91\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-91.jpg\" alt=\"photo-91\" width=\"448\" height=\"336\" \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#333333;\">Everyone who wanted, then came and laid a flower in front of the headstone or touched the headstone to\u00a0pay his\/her\u00a0respects.\u00a0\u00a0Very emotional as you saw all ages pass in front of this grave&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-101.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1951  aligncenter\" title=\"photo-101\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-101.jpg\" alt=\"photo-101\" width=\"391\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\">While we were standing there, we heard (on cd) <em>Flowers of the Forest<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Soldiers of Australia<\/em>\u00a0 (a slow march on the melody of Waltzing Matilda.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#333333;\">And then&#8230;\u00a0when everyone had passed the\u00a0headstone,\u00a0little Hamish stepped forward and tied a scarf\u00a0to the headstone of his great great uncle.\u00a0 The scarfs that the family were wearing on this European trip and that\u00a0were knitted by Tim&#8217;s mother.\u00a0 And one of these scarfs&#8230; will from now on keep &#8216;uncle Will&#8217; warm here in Harlebeke !\u00a0 A most beautiful and moving tribute !<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-112.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1955\" title=\"photo-112\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-112.jpg\" alt=\"photo-112\" width=\"336\" height=\"431\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-111.jpg\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\">Then everyone returned to the Cross of Sacrifice (almost at the entrance of this cemetery) and we left the Leggett family for a while at the grave of their (great) great uncle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-121.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1957\" title=\"photo-121\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/photo-121.jpg\" alt=\"photo-121\" width=\"337\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">\u00a0Our thanks to Johan for sharing his Remembrance Day 2008, in Belgium, with us.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0LEST WE FORGET<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*****<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\">The<em><strong> Families and Friends of the First AIF<\/strong><\/em> thanks the Australian, UK and French governments for affording Australian and British soldiers &#8211; presently buried in mass graves at Pheasant Wood &#8211; dignified individual reburials in a new CWGC cemetery at Fromelles, and applauds Minister Snowdon and his British counterpart, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence and Minister for Veterans, Kevan Jones MP, for their joint decision to DNA test the remains at exhumation and use every reasonable method to attempt identification of each soldier.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FFFAIF Belgium member Johan Durnez continues his report on &#8216;a wonderful and emotional Remembrance Day 2008&#8217;, which included the spontaneous presentation of &#8216;a warm scarf for greatgreatuncle Will&#8217;.
