Renovations."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has recently announced <span style=\"font-family:Verdana;\">a major, three-year horticultural renovation project at Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery in France.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/australian-memorial-villers-bret-view-from-tower_sml.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2011\" title=\"australian-memorial-villers-bret-view-from-tower_sml\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/australian-memorial-villers-bret-view-from-tower_sml.jpg\" alt=\"australian-memorial-villers-bret-view-from-tower_sml\" width=\"448\" height=\"316\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">Photo: View from the top of the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux. [Chris Munro]<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made on the Commissions website: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwgc.org\" target=\"_blank\">www.cwgc.org<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<em>Commencing at the end of November 2008, the work has become necessary because a large proportion of the existing Hornbeam tree belt have deteriorated with age and are impacting upon the fabric of the cemetery.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>The Commission\u2019s Director of Horticulture, John Tooke MBE said, \u201cUndertaking the work now will ensure there is minimum disruption for visitors and sufficient time for the new avenue of trees to establish before major commemorative events in 2018. The work will be carried out in three phases and will be complete by 2010.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>The project\u2019s aim is to reinstate the original design principle of the cemetery \u2013 rows of healthy, conically shaped trees the length of the cemetery, thereby allowing a framed view of the memorial and cemetery entrance.
