The poem was written by McCrae the day after he witnessed the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer. This poem symbolises the sacrifices of all who fought in the Great War.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><em>In Flanders fields the poppies blow<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Between the crosses, row on row<\/em>,<br \/>\n<em>That mark our place; and in the sky<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The larks, still bravely singing, fly<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Scarce heard amid the guns below<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#333333;\"><em>We are the dead.
