{"id":2904,"date":"2009-03-18T01:25:14","date_gmt":"2009-03-17T14:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/?p=2904"},"modified":"2009-03-18T01:25:14","modified_gmt":"2009-03-17T14:25:14","slug":"memorial-way-blackbutt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/?p=2904","title":{"rendered":"Memorial Way No. 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week in <em>Memorial Way<\/em> we are travelling to the top of the Blackbutt range north, north-west of Brisbane, Queensland to the timber town of <strong><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Blackbutt <span style=\"color:#888888;\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><\/strong> named after the famous blackbutt tree cut from the surrounding forests for the timber industry.<\/p>\n<p>Blackbutt War Memorial stands at the intersection of the D&#8217;Aguilar Highway and Hart Street (GPS 26\u00b053&#8217;6.83&#8243;S, 152\u00b0 6&#8217;3.83&#8243;E).<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2906\" href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/2009\/03\/18\/memorial-way-blackbutt\/blackbutt1_matt-smith_sml\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2906\" title=\"blackbutt1_matt-smith_sml\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/03\/blackbutt1_matt-smith_sml.jpg\" alt=\"blackbutt1_matt-smith_sml\" width=\"301\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/blackbutt1_matt-smith_sml.jpg 301w, https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/blackbutt1_matt-smith_sml-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Photo: Blackbutt War Memorial [<em><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/2009\/02\/25\/memorial-way-no3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Salute the Brave<\/a><\/em>]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The sandstone monument features a life-sized Australian Infantry soldier standing at ease and resting one hand on the tree trunk support.<\/p>\n<p>The memorial was made by Lowther and Sons. The Blackbutt Memorial was carved by one of the sons, Charles Lowther who served with the 11<sup>th<\/sup> Australian Light Horse in Palestine. On his service record Charles Lowther states his occupation as &#8216;marble carver&#8217;. After returning to Australia in 1919, Charles worked in the family firm which was the largest supplier of stone and marble in the southern hemisphere during World War 1.<\/p>\n<p>The inscription on the front plaque reads:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Their name liveth for ever more<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2907\" href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/2009\/03\/18\/memorial-way-blackbutt\/blackbutt2_matt-smith_sml\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2907\" title=\"blackbutt2_matt-smith_sml\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/03\/blackbutt2_matt-smith_sml.jpg\" alt=\"blackbutt2_matt-smith_sml\" width=\"257\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/blackbutt2_matt-smith_sml.jpg 257w, https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/blackbutt2_matt-smith_sml-172x300.jpg 172w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Below are inscribed the names of 16 soldiers killed and one who died of illness.
