{"id":3658,"date":"2009-05-05T21:31:05","date_gmt":"2009-05-05T10:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/?p=3658"},"modified":"2026-04-27T23:37:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T13:37:40","slug":"fromelles-dig-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/?p=3658","title":{"rendered":"Fromelles Dig Begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The quest to recover and identify the remains of the Australian and British soldiers buried by the Germans following the Battle of Fromelles of 19-20 July 1916\u00a0moves to a new phase this week with the commencement of the exhumation process.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3693\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/2009\/05\/05\/fromelles-dig-begins\/fromelles-battlefield-pheasant-wood-field-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3693\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3693\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3693\" title=\"fromelles-battlefield-pheasant-wood-field-2\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/05\/fromelles-battlefield-pheasant-wood-field-2.jpg\" alt=\"The location of the burial pits &quot;before Pheasant Wood&quot;, Fromelles\" width=\"500\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/fromelles-battlefield-pheasant-wood-field-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/fromelles-battlefield-pheasant-wood-field-2-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The location of the burial pits &#8220;before Pheasant Wood&#8221;, Fromelles<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As visitors to this web-site will be aware, the exhumation process has followed a long process commencing with Lambis Englezos, supported by Ward Selby and John Fielding, identifying that more than 160 Australian soldiers were not accounted for by burials of soldiers with known graves or burials of unknown soldiers.\u00a0 Their research led to confirmation that the Bavarian Regiment of the German Army issued instructions for the burial of up to 400 &#8220;English&#8221; soldiers &#8220;before Pheasant Wood&#8221; immediately following the battle.\u00a0 A German &#8220;death list&#8221; was provided by the Germans to the International Red Cross in November 1916\u00a0and in March 1917 identity discs were returned through the International Red Cross to the soldiers families.\u00a0 The German soldiers had removed the identity discs and buried the soldiers in 5\u00a0large pits.\u00a0 As the front-line area had been evacuated by civilians, by the time of the Armistice in November 1918, when the Allies were able to return to the area, the pits had\u00a0been filled in, overgrown and were no longer distinguishable.\u00a0 Subsequent inspections in 1919 and 1920 by the Australian War Graves Registration Section and the Australian Graves Services\u00a0were unable to locate the burial area, even though there were documentary records referring to them.<\/p>\n<p>Background to the battle and the battle tactics are\u00a0summarised in the Research area of this web site and may be accessed by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/research-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clicking here<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 The Australian Government Policy for Burial of War Dead is also in this Research area.
