{"id":442,"date":"2008-06-26T09:06:49","date_gmt":"2008-06-25T22:06:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/?p=442"},"modified":"2008-06-26T09:06:49","modified_gmt":"2008-06-25T22:06:49","slug":"from-red-cross-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/?p=442","title":{"rendered":"From Red Cross Files"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The 55<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion was part of the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Brigade of the 5<sup>th<\/sup> Division, AIF which took part in the ill fated Battle of Fromelles on the evening of 19<sup>th<\/sup> July 1916. Research undertaken by Lambis Englezos using the <em><strong>Red Cross Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau Files<\/strong><\/em> available on line at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awm.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Australian War Memorial <\/a>has provided a list of the names of the &#8220;missing&#8221; soldiers buried by the German army after the battle at Pheasant Wood. There are 15 soldiers from the 55<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion listed amongst them. During the recent archaeological dig it has been confirmed that the remains of these soldiers have lain undisturbed for nearly 92 years in a field at Pheasant Wood.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awm.gov.au\/redcross\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Red Cross Wounded and Missing Files<\/em> <\/a>also revealed the fate of other soldiers who died in the battle.<\/p>\n<p>Today we are proud to introduce English born <strong>Private Henry Mayer<\/strong>.\u00a0 Private Mayer was one of the 1,917 Australian soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice at the Battle of Fromelles. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/06\/pte-henry-mayer_sml.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-443  aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/06\/pte-henry-mayer_sml.jpg\" alt=\"Private Henry Mayer\" width=\"295\" height=\"448\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">Photo: Private Henry Mayer\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Henry was a 22 year old railway employee from Mortdale (Sydney), New South Wales when he enlisted. He embarked for overseas service with the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Battalion but on reaching Egypt in January 1916 was transferred to the newly formed 55<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion. By the 30<sup>th<\/sup> June 1916, the 55<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion was in France and the Battalion entered the frontline trenches for the first time on 12 July and fought its first major battle at Fromelles a week later.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian <em>Red Cross Wounded and Missing Files<\/em><em> <\/em>provide an insight into his death.<\/p>\n<p>Private Mayer died in one of the German trenches which were captured for a short time by the 55<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion. The reports state:<\/p>\n<p>Pte Bishop 3762 55<sup>th<\/sup> AIF: Mayer was in the German trenches with his Machine Gun Section. A German sniper shot him through the head and killed him instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Sgt Roberts 3911 55<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion: He was in a Lewis Gun Section at Fromelles and was holding the trench we had taken from Fritz. At daybreak on the 20<sup>th<\/sup> July 1916 a sniper shot him in the head killing him instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Lieut Aggisez [Agassiz], M.G. Officer 55<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion: Pte Mayer was killed when firing a Machine Gun over my shoulder. It was in the German third line at midnight on 19<sup>th<\/sup> July. He was killed instantaneously, and could not have suffered any pain. I have not heard that any of the bodies were buried. He was quiet but a fighter, one of my best lads. I handed in his pay book and identity disc at Battn.
