{"id":487,"date":"2008-07-05T01:54:36","date_gmt":"2008-07-04T14:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/?p=487"},"modified":"2008-07-05T01:54:36","modified_gmt":"2008-07-04T14:54:36","slug":"commemoration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/?p=487","title":{"rendered":"Commemoration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Fifth Division of the AIF was formed in February 1916 and consisted of the <strong>8<sup>th<\/sup> Brigade<\/strong> &#8211; 29<sup>th<\/sup>, 30<sup>th<\/sup>, 31<sup>st<\/sup>, 32<sup>nd<\/sup> Battalions; <strong>14<sup>th<\/sup> Brigade<\/strong> &#8211; 53<sup>rd<\/sup>, 54<sup>th<\/sup>, 55<sup>th<\/sup>, 56<sup>th<\/sup> Battalions and <strong>15<sup>th<\/sup> Brigade<\/strong> &#8211; 57<sup>th<\/sup>, 58<sup>th<\/sup>, 59<sup>th<\/sup>, 60<sup>th<\/sup> Battalions. The Fifth Division embarked from Alexandria in Egypt via Marseilles in France to join the troops on the battlefields of the Western Front. The Fifth Division under the command of Major General James W. McCay took part in the Battle of Fromelles which proved costly for the Division which suffered 5,533 casualties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Arthur Joseph Weir was a member of A Company, 29<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion when he embarked from Melbourne in November 1915. Private Weir&#8217;s Service Record, which can be viewed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naa.gov.au\/collection\/recordsearch.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">National Archives of Australia<\/a>, is a short 22 pages in length and there are no eyewitness accounts in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awm.gov.au\/redcross\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Red Cross Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau File<\/em>s <\/a>to give an insight into how he died. The Red Cross files do however contain the vital German documents which provided the evidence for Lambis Englezos to add Private Weir&#8217;s name to the missing buried at Pheasant Wood. Private Weir is commemorated on the wall at VC Corner Cemetery Fromelles adjacent to the Australian Memorial Park.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">SPECIAL NOTICE OF UPCOMING COMMEMORATIONS AND EVENTS IN MELBOURNE<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Australian Memorial Park contains the Cobbers Sculpture by Peter Corlett which was unveiled in 1998. The sculpture is based on Sergeant Simon Fraser (No.3101) of 57th Battalion\u00a0rescuing a cobber from the 60<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion.\u00a0On the 92<sup>nd<\/sup> Anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles, a second Cobbers sculpture will be unveiled at The Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne.
