{"id":4949,"date":"2009-07-16T12:29:09","date_gmt":"2009-07-16T01:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/?p=4949"},"modified":"2009-07-16T12:29:09","modified_gmt":"2009-07-16T01:29:09","slug":"2009-memorial-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/?p=4949","title":{"rendered":"*2009 Memorial Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\" align=\"center\">John Laffin Memorial Lecture<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">The 2009 John Laffin Memorial Lecture provided an opportunity for more than 50 members of the FFFAIF to gather at the Ashfield RSL to hear this year\u2019s guest speakers\u2019 insights into the actions at Gallipoli during 1915.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\" align=\"center\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4948\" href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/16\/2009-memorial-lecture\/jlml_meeting\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4948\" title=\"JLML_meeting\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/jlml_meeting.jpg\" alt=\"JLML_meeting\" width=\"448\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\" align=\"center\">Photo: FFFAIF members seated in the Ashfield RSL sub-branch room<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">Members were greeted by FFFAIF President Russell Curley who introduced each of the speakers. Proceedings commenced with Member Darryl Kelly reciting &#8220;The Ode&#8221;. The first to address the meeting was Member Joe Crumlin who spoke on <strong><em>Defeat at<\/em><\/strong> <em><strong>Gallipoli &#8211; The German Connection<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\" align=\"center\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4952\" href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/16\/2009-memorial-lecture\/jlml_speakers\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4952\" title=\"JLML_speakers\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/jlml_speakers.jpg\" alt=\"JLML_speakers\" width=\"448\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\" align=\"center\">Photo: Speakers\u00a0&#8211; Brigadier Phil Carey (Rtd)\u00a0and\u00a0Joe Crumlin\u00a0(l to r)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">After an informal lunch break the second speaker Member Brigadier Phil Carey (Rtd) addressed the meeting with his thought provoking <strong><em>1st of the 1st Landing on ANZAC<\/em><\/strong>, giving an insight into the landing of the First Division of the 1<sup>st<\/sup> AIF at Gallipoli. The presentations were followed by a lively question and answer session.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;text-align:center;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4955\" href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/16\/2009-memorial-lecture\/jlml_matt-smith\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4955\" title=\"JLML_Matt Smith\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/jlml_matt-smith.jpg\" alt=\"JLML_Matt Smith\" width=\"314\" height=\"448\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">The meeting concluded with Queensland Member Matt Smith who is the Co-ordinator of the <strong>Australian War Graves Photographic Archive<\/strong> giving a brief outline of the progress in assembling a collection of photographs of the individual headstones and memorials for the 102,000 Australian soldiers who have died in conflicts during the 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century. The project now has more than 92,000 photographs and work is progressing on developing a website to allow access to the photographs. So, if Members wish to obtain a copy of the war grave of an Australian serviceman who has died in the service of their country, the <strong>Australian War Graves Photographic Archive<\/strong> will shortly be able to provide this.
