{"id":6958,"date":"2009-11-11T00:05:47","date_gmt":"2009-11-10T13:05:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fffaif.wordpress.com\/?p=6958"},"modified":"2009-11-11T00:05:47","modified_gmt":"2009-11-10T13:05:47","slug":"the-shrine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fffaif.org.au\/?p=6958","title":{"rendered":"The Shrine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong>THE SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE MELBOURNE<br \/>\nDECLARED A NATIONAL MEMORIAL<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/11\/dedication-the-shrine_vic-state-library_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7005\" title=\"Dedication The Shrine_Vic State Library_web\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/11\/dedication-the-shrine_vic-state-library_web.jpg\" alt=\"Dedication The Shrine_Vic State Library_web\" width=\"448\" height=\"283\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>Photo<\/strong>: The Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne. 11 November 1934<br \/>\n[State Library of Victoria]<\/p>\n<p>The Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne was dedicated 75 years ago on 11 November 1934.<\/p>\n<p>The Shrine of Remembrance\u00a0has been declared\u00a0a national memorial by The Minister for Veterans\u2019 Affairs, Alan Griffin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Shrine is an iconic memorial and it is fitting that, at the time of its 75<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary commemorations, it is formally recognised as one of Australia\u2019s most significant memorials,\u201d Mr Griffin said.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister made the announcement at the launch of <em>A Place to Remember \u2013 A History of the Shrine of Remembrance<\/em>, a book charting the Shrine\u2019s history from its inception to the present day.\u00a0 The launch is one of a number of events marking the 75<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the dedication of the Shrine on 11 November 1934.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilt to remember the 114,000 thousand Victorians who served in the Great War, including the 19,000 who did not come home, the Shrine is a uniquely Victorian creation that has become a symbol to many Australians,\u201d Mr Griffin said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDesigned and built by Victorians using mainly Victorian materials the Shrine was intended to stand permanently as a monument of remembrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the <em>Military Memorials of National Significance Act<\/em>, an eligible memorial must be of an appropriate, scale, design and standard, and be dignified and symbolic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt must be a memorial for the sole purpose of commemorating a significant aspect of Australia\u2019s wartime history and must have a major role in community commemorative activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, the memorial must be owned or managed by an authority at the state, territory or local government level and be maintained by that authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly the Shrine of Remembrance meets all these criteria, and I am proud to today sign the instrument making this formal declaration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">*****<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">An Invitation <\/span>to join <em>FFFAIF <\/em>member Professor Bruce Scates, Director of the National Centre for Australian Studies as he charts the Shrine\u2019s history from the first fatalities of the Gallipoli Landing to the \u2018Memory Wars\u2019 present day.
