It was initially used by the military to describe the cove where the Australian and New Zealand troops went ashore at Gallipoli\u00a0in the early hours of 25<sup>th<\/sup> April 1915 but soon began to refer to the men themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awm.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Australian War Memorial<\/a>\u00a0describes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awm.gov.au\/commemoration\/anzac\/index.asp\" target=\"_blank\">ANZAC Day<\/a>\u00a0as <em>going beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day we remember all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>During the Gallipoli campaign 8,709 Australians were killed. One of the casualties was Sergeant Edward Larkin, N<sup>o<\/sup> 321. Sgt Larkin was killed in action on 25<sup>th<\/sup> April 1915.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/sgt-larkin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8445\" title=\"Sgt Larkin\" src=\"http:\/\/fffaif.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/sgt-larkin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>Photo<\/strong>: Sergeant Edward (Ted) Larkin<br \/>\nin Egypt January 1915\u00a0[Munro Collection]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Prior to enlisting Edward Larkin was the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Willoughby in the New South Wales Parliament. Previously he been a policeman but had\u00a0resigned from the police force to become the first secretary of the New South Wales Rugby League from 1909 until 1913. As a youth he had represented New South Wales and Australia in rugby union.<\/p>\n<p>Private Edward LARKIN, N<sup>o<\/sup> 321, enlisted on 17<sup>th<\/sup> August 1914 in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> Battalion\u00a0AIF and was promoted\u00a0to sergeant on 22<sup>nd<\/sup> August. He embarked aboard the <em>Afric<\/em>\u00a0on 18<sup>th<\/sup> October 1914. Sergeant Larkin\u00a0was popular with the men of the AIF and regarded as a \u2018good sport\u2019. Private Cavill in his book <em>Imperishable Anzacs<\/em> remembers him attending a Sports Day in Mena, Egypt in March 1915, preparing for a donkey\u00a0race. \u2018Sergeant (Teddie) Larkin, M.P., was trotting about the ground with a bunch of lucerne, suspended on his stick in front of the donkey\u2019s nose\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Sergeant Larkin\u2019s actions during 25<sup>th<\/sup> April 1915, Gallipoli landing were recorded in official army records as having performed \u2018acts of conspicuous gallantry and valuable service, which testified to his devotion to duty towards King and Country\u2019.
