Books and the Anzac Great War Bibliography

Many books have been written on Australia’s involvement in the Great War 1914-18 and its consequential impact on families and society in general in Australia.

This page gives links to the Official Histories and Unit diaries as well as a comprehensive Anzac Great War Bibliography of publications created for the centenary of the Great War compiled by FFFAIF member Sue Tongue. This is followed by a listing of publications by current and former FFFAIF members.

The Official History of Australia in the War 1914-1918

The Official History of Australia in the War 1914-1918 edited by Charles Bean is the comprehensive and authoritative account of military operations. This is available on-line in the Australian War Memorial collection at
Official Histories, Rolls & Unit Diaries | Australian War Memorial

The Official History has been largely derived from the collection of War Diaries created by the units of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) during the First World War. These are also available on-line in the AWM collection at
Australian Imperial Force unit war diaries, 1914-18 War | Australian War Memorial

While on active service, Army headquarters, formations and units were required to keep unit war diaries recording their daily activities. These diaries were arranged by unit and covered the period of one month at a time.

Anzac Great War Centenary Bibliography:
Australian Local And Other Publications List

During the centenary of the Great War in Australia many publications told the stories behind the names on local war memorials. They are gathered here.  Some were funded by the Australian government’s ANZAC Centenary project (marked *).  Also included, for completeness, are some local records published before the centenary and some other centenary publications from the National Library’s catalogue.
