OVER the TOP

Australia’s diggers didn’t go over the top for King and Country, they did it for their mates and their battalion – extraordinary deeds performed by ordinary men. Harry George Harnett

OVER THE TOP front cover_web

Henry George Hartnett, known as Harry, joined the Australian Imperial Force on 13 September 1915 at the age of 23. He saw the action on the Western Front at Fromelles and on the Somme, receiving his first ‘Blighty’ in the Battle of Pozières, a wound so serious he was sent back to Britain for treatment. Upon his recovery, he returned to ‘tour’ the front with his battalion – an endless cycle of fighting interspersed with brief rest periods behind the lines.

“Although diaries were forbidden, I managed to secrete one in my haversack; brief notes were made in it each day, often under difficulties, especially when we were in the front-line trenches. Though brief and disjointed, its soiled pages contain much that is priceless to me …”

Several years after the war ended, Harry turned his diaries into this fascinating memoir. Several more decades were to pass before the manuscript came into the hands of FFFAIF member Chris Bryett, a passionate amateur military historian. In spite of the great passage of time, the larrikin spirit of the young diggers still shines through. In Over The Top Harry recalls the battles, the long marches, and the many amusing events that provided escape from the horrors of the battlefront. His moving descriptions give the reader insight into the unshakeable bonds forged between the men trapped in situations they could never have imagined.

In the book, Harry Hartnett provides intriguing details about the army equipment, food, weaponry and battles without ever over emphasising the horrors he must have seen. Harry believed that the experiences recorded in his book were not personal so much as indicative of the experience of all diggers, of all units, and his hope was that the deeds of the diggers and their sacrifices would not be forgotten.  Over the Top takes the reader on an eye-opening tour of life in and behind the trenches of the Western Front through the diaries of digger Harry Hartnett. His book, which has not previously been published, is a magnificent gift to Australia.

Over the Top is published by Allen & Unwin and is available in bookshops from 26 October, 2009. RRP $35

Craig Laffin gave an interesting insight into how the collection was gathered by his father as the family visited the battlefields of the Western Front over many years. He also conveyed the passion his father had for preserving Digger heritage through the collection of battlefield artefacts.

On Saturday 10 October, the Australian Ambassador to France, His Excellency, Mr David A. Ritchie, officially opened the renovations and extensions to the Fromelles village school. The school is now officially known as the Cobbers. The renaming of the school reflects the close connection between the small village of Fromelles and Australia.

*Latest from Fromelles

The Australian Army Fromelles Project continues to post updates on the archaeological dig at Pheasant Wood Fromelles.

The latest update on the project was issued on 25 September and stated:
boots_imgw237Another milestone was achieved this week with the completion of all primary processing of the 250 sets of remains and many hundreds of artefacts. There are 17 sets of remains left to undergo full anthropological analysis, and 60 artefact assemblages left to record and catalogue. Anthropology will be completed by mid October. This week, work on the finds from Grave Three was completed (conservation, identifying, photographing and cataloguing) and work on the finds from Graves Four and Grave Five are well under-way. Of particular interest this week is a ‘pair’ of boots in brown leather, worn by an individual in Grave Four. One of the boots is notably distorted and they both have a different number of eyelets (one seven and the other one, eight) – it appears that the soldier was actually wearing two right boots. One may have been salvaged to replace a worn out, or missing, boot.
A ‘cross and wreath’ badge, found in the upper chest region of an individual, was also found in Grave Three.  possible_school_badge_imgw165This is not a military badge and may be a school or club badge from home. The back is marked ‘mexican silver’. This may be a helpful lead for research into identity and will be investigated further. Also of interest are the leather ends from a pair of ‘police and firemans’ braces, marked as such on the large leather piece from the back.
Pipe2_imgw205A remarkably well preserved pipe with a bent mouthpiece was also seen this week. It is not clear if the mouthpiece was bent as a result of being buried, or if the pipe was used like this. If the latter, it would suggest that the individual was left handed and may have adjusted the pipe so that the glow of the lit bowl would not alert snipers to his whereabouts. Analysis of the dentition, for pipe notches, may clarify.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has recently issued it’s 6th Remembering Fromelles Newsletter also containing up to date information on the archaeological dig as well as progress reports on the new cemetery being built in Fromelles; DNA for identification; and upcoming exhibitions to coincide with the opening of the new cemetery in 2010.
