The Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne was dedicated 75 years ago on 11 November 1934.

The Shrine of Remembrance has been declared a national memorial by The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Alan Griffin.

“The Shrine is an iconic memorial and it is fitting that, at the time of its 75th anniversary commemorations, it is formally recognised as one of Australia’s most significant memorials,” Mr Griffin said.

The Minister made the announcement at the launch of A Place to Remember – A History of the Shrine of Remembrance, a book charting the Shrine’s history from its inception to the present day.  The launch is one of a number of events marking the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the Shrine on 11 November 1934.

“Built to remember the 114,000 thousand Victorians who served in the Great War, including the 19,000 who did not come home, the Shrine is a uniquely Victorian creation that has become a symbol to many Australians,” Mr Griffin said.

“Designed and built by Victorians using mainly Victorian materials the Shrine was intended to stand permanently as a monument of remembrance.

“Under the Military Memorials of National Significance Act, an eligible memorial must be of an appropriate, scale, design and standard, and be dignified and symbolic.

“It must be a memorial for the sole purpose of commemorating a significant aspect of Australia’s wartime history and must have a major role in community commemorative activities.

“Also, the memorial must be owned or managed by an authority at the state, territory or local government level and be maintained by that authority.

“Clearly the Shrine of Remembrance meets all these criteria, and I am proud to today sign the instrument making this formal declaration.”

*****

An Invitation to join FFFAIF member Professor Bruce Scates, Director of the National Centre for Australian Studies as he charts the Shrine’s history from the first fatalities of the Gallipoli Landing to the ‘Memory Wars’ present day. The author of the Cambridge history of the Shrine, Professor Scates will bring the building to life though powerful personal stories, archival intrigues and a stunning visual archive.

The Plaque was unveiled by Major General R. Sharp.

During the service Theodore Arfaras, representing the President of the Association Des Anciens Combattants Francais presented the 45th Battalion Association with a World War 1 1914 French Army Helmet, in original condition. Mr Arfaras said “this helmet displays the grenade and anchor which means it was worn by a member of the colonial armies of France also known by the nickname the Black Force of General Mangin. I thought it was right that the Aussies have a memento of this day as a token of gratitude from the French ….. this helmet was an appropriate one’.

MHSA Fromelles Talk

From
The Military Historical Society of Australia
Victoria Branch

MHSA Vic

 An invitation to attend
a talk by Lambis Englezos

‘Fromelles and Pheasant Wood’
A talk on the history of the battle, the research and most recent work at the site…

MHSA_LambisMr Lambis Englezos, AM is well-known as the amateur historian and school teacher responsible for discovering mass war graves of Australian and British soldiers from World War 1 near Fromelles in France.  He became a member of the Order of Australia this year after being recognised for “service to the community through research and advocacy roles” relating to that discovery.

The location of the Fromelles mass burial site was first indicated by Melburnian Mr Englezos’ amateur historian research efforts.  It took him over five years to convince sceptical bureaucrats and professional researchers that the burial pits existed.  Now our lost Diggers will be recovered and remembered.

On Thursday 26th November at 8.00 pm, Mr Englezos will make a presentation to the MHSA’s meeting at the Oakleigh-Carnegie RSL in Drummond Street, Oakleigh. The presentation is open to the public.

The MHSA Victoria Branch contact is FFFAIF member Mr Steve Gray at 0409 809 434 or email vicsec@mhsa.org.au

Lost and Found

Over 3,000 British and Australian troops were killed at the Battle of Fromelles on the Western Front, in what is still considered the worst 24 hour period in Australia’s military history.
Now, thanks to amateur advocacy and commonwealth dollars, the remains of 250 missing from that night have been found and exhumed. The task of identifying the bodies through DNA analysis has begun, setting an expensive and complex precedent.
But the question remains, where are the other bodies, and should the British and Australian Government’s go looking for them?

Find out more this Sunday 8:30pm on SBS ONE.
The program is repeated on SBS TWO on Monday at 7:30 pm AEST.

Diggers’ databases

A recent newspaper article appearing in the Herald Sun in Victoria, Daily Telegraph in NSW, Courier Mail in Queensland and Adelaide Now in South Australia highlights the need to use a variety of sources to verify information collected when researching the war service of members of the First AIF.

logo-awmThe Australian War Memorial has an extensive data base which is an excellent starting point for research in this field. It includes within the Biographical Database: the Roll of Honour; Nominal Rolls including Embarkation Rolls; Honours and Awards and Red Cross Wounded and Missing Files. Good research technique involves consulting as many sources as possible to confirm the validity of information by identifying errors and omissions which may occur.

logo-naaThe National Archives of Australia contains within its digitised records all the Service Records of World War 1 soldiers held within the archives. These records provide an opportunity to compare from primary sources the information recorded on the Australian War Memorial data base. The NAA also has on its internet site a project known as Mapping Our Anzacs which identifies the service men who enlisted at each place of enlistment and is gathering information and photographs of those who served during the Great War.

The internet has the capacity to provide the descendants of servicemen and women, students as well as researchers with a host of different data bases and information to help in researching Australian soldiers who served in the Great War. Australia has one of the most comprehensive collections in the world on which to base historical research. An example is the New Zealand database of soldiers who served in the Great War only contains the service records of those soldiers who remained in the army and were not discharged.

logo-adfaThe Australian Defence Academy (ADFA) AIF Project has also compiled a database with summaries of service records of those men who served in the AIF drawing on information from the Australian War Memorial and National Archives and as a secondary source is therefore constrained in its accuracy by the sources it has used. This once again highlights the need to consult multiple information sources.

logo-cwgcThe Commonwealth War Graves Commission provides information on those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War. The CWGC data base allows researchers to search by name and can provide the location of graves or where the soldier’s sacrifice is commemorated.  This source, like others, may contain errors, however processes are in place for having information corrected.

Beyond the sphere of these websites there are many sites which contain additional information which may be of assistance in clarifying inconsistencies in data gathered. One example of such a site is the Australian War Graves Photographic Archive which was established and is maintained by FFFAIF member Matt Smith. The AWGPA is committed to digitally photographing every Australian War Grave and contains photos of the graves of all Australian who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Great War while serving overseas. These photos are available on request through the AWGPA.

FFFAIF member and editor of DIGGER magazine, Graeme Hosken is author of digging for Diggers an excellent guide to beginning research on the men of the first AIF.

To add an extra dimension to a Digger’s story it is also possible to access the Unit Diaries of each of the AIF Battalions through Australians at War on the Australian War Memorial website along with the Official History of Australia in the Great War.

It is also possible to expand research beyond the Allied perspective of the Great War as the Australian War Memorial Collection also contains 900 First World War German Official and Regimental Histories in its Published Collection (see AWM Blog dated 20 October 2009).

The efficient use of available data bases and collections is a valuable research tool and skills can be continually updated and expanded. For people interested in finding out how to start their own research or improve and enhance their skills, the Families and Friends of the First AIF (FFFAIF) is holding a Members’ Forum on 15 November at Ashfield RSL Club in Sydney. On the day information will be available on research techniques from the basic skills through to advanced techniques e.g. overlaying original trench maps onto Google Earth.

Visitors are welcome.
