The Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division (GUARD) led by Dr Tony Pollard carried out preliminary excavations at Pheasant Wood, Fromelles in May-June this year. The project confirmed the presence of the remains of World War 1 soldiers in previously undisturbed burial pits.

The GUARD Report is available through the Department of Defence website. To access the report click here.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has responsibility for the investigation, recovery and reburial of the remains of Australian military personnel, whereas the Department of Veteran’s Affairs and Office of War Graves are responsible for the official commemoration of Australian servicemen and women whose remains are found at battlefield sites in accordance with The Defence Instructions (General) Missing In Action Presumed Killed: Recovery Of Human Remains Of Australian Defence Force Members PERS 20-4, issued on 12 December 1996 (available on-line at http://austmia.com/DI(G)PERS20-4.htm).

As the report of the Glasgow University Archaeological Research Department (GUARD) has established the feasibility of individual recovery of soldier’s remains and that identification through DNA may be possible, Army as the investigating authority has been considering how this is to be done.  To facilitate this, the Army’s Australian Fromelles Project Group has commissioned research to determine the working list of those soldiers thought to be interred at Pheasant Wood and has met with key people involved in researching the identity these soldiers.

The meeting at the Australian Army Headquarters in Canberra on 25 November was convened by MajGen Mike O’Brien (Retd) and included Emeritus Professor Peter Dennis, The AIF Project at University of NSW at the Australian Defence Force Academy; Roger Lee, Head of the Army History Unit; Lt Col. James Brownlie, Project Manager and Ms Belinda Cole, Communications Manager; MajGen Paul Stevens (Retd) and Kathy Upton Mitchell of the Office of War Graves in the Department of Veteran’s Affairs; Craig Tibbitts, Curator Official Records, Australian War Memorial.  In addition, Peter Reece and Luke Toy, advisers to the Minister for Defence Science and Personnel participated in the meeting.  Key non-government attendees included FFFAIF members Lambis Englezos and Tim Whitford (Friends of the 15th Brigade), Sandra Playle and Tim Lycett (Fromelles Descendents Database project), Professor Bruce Scates, Director of the National Centre for Australian Studies, Monash University and Jim Munro, Vice President of FFFAIF.

The meeting clarified that 178 Australian soldiers should be included in the working list of name of soldiers thought to be interred at Pheasant Wood.  This list will be made available through next week’s web posting and relatives will be invited to register their interest for participating in DNA analysis.

*11/11 in Belgium:1

FFFAIF member Johan Durnez shares his account of Remembrance Day commemorations in Belgium.

Members of the Leggett Family had travelled from Australia to join Johan and other locals from Geluwe  on the 90th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice to pay tribute to William Leggett, who was amongst the first of more than fifteen thousand Australians who died in the battles of Ypres. (For details on Corporal of Horse, W. T. Leggett see RECENT NEWS item: 1st Aussie Casualty on Western Front .

Johan describes the commemorations:
William Leggett died in Geluwe and he is buried now in the Harlebeke New British Cemetery in Harelbeke (about 30 kilometers east of Geluwe), so we decided to have two commemorations: one in Geluwe at the Leggett Memorial on Monday 10 November and one in Harelbeke on Remembrance Day.
The weather was kind to us as it stopped raining for the time of the commemoration !  But it was cloudy, windy and cold (what you can expect for November, of course !)  The commemoration happened at the William Leggett memorial at the church of Geluwe and was followed by a function at the old town hall.
We were welcomed by a girl who played a tune on the Flemish bagpipe………..

photo-110

As you can see on the photos below, we did not only have the Leggett family as our Australian guests, but also Bill Hourigan.

photo-21

Grace Leggett read a text in which she mentioned the both memorials (the one in Geluwe and the one in Goulburn.)

photo-31

More photos of the service can be seen on the Belgium website The great war in Flanders Fields – A war and peace experience . To view a great collection of photos of this service and the function hosted in the town hall afterwards click here. While at the reception a moving tribute was paid to the Leggett family by a World War II veteran. The photos of this presentation appear at the end of the collection of those shown on the website above.

Johan takes up the story:
Finally, the Leggett family was given a special souvenir by an old local. The man who offered it is the last surviving of the local Armed Resistance (Secret Army, you can say) who fought in World War II against the German occupiers.   The man had never heard of quarantine rules in Australia, had never heard of the strict rules on taking ammunition on board of an aeroplane, but what he offered came from the bottom of his heart and his tears were not faked at all.  It was his way to show his great appreciation for what people from the other side of the globe had done. Not only in 1914-1918, but also in 1939-1945 : they came over to fight here for our freedom. They fought on his side against occupation and oppression…

He offered Tim and his family authentic World War I shrapnel cases and authentic rounds.  Tim realised that taking these souvenirs home is not possible, but what he and his family will take home is the memory meeting a humble local who understands very well what it is to risk his own life for the freedom and who has great admiration for those who came from far away and paid the supreme sacrifice for that…

The Belgium website The great war in Flanders Fields – A war and peace experience hosts a vast array of photos of events around Flanders including:
Fields of Poppies at Menin Gate on Remembrance Day
Re-dedication of Private Storey’s headstone – Zonnebeke – 30/09/2008
Poppy Parade at Ieper

FFFAIF Belgium member Johan Durnez continues his report on ‘a wonderful and emotional Remembrance Day 2008’, which included the spontaneous presentation of ‘a warm scarf for greatgreatuncle Will’.

Johan says:
In the night of 10-11 November we had lots of rain and there was also a very strong wind. The weather forecast promised that it would stop raining in the morning and… yes, this turned out to be right!  The clouds opened and we got some sun but the wind was still strong.  As you can see on this picture it was pretty cold!

photo-41

We were happy to welcome at least 50 people who attended our service.  Among them the Mayor and Aldermen of the town Harelbeke, members of the town council, a fine delegation of the local fire brigade and police, patriotic associations and their standard bearers, the representative of the Australian Embassy Mr Allen Bryce, agriculture counsellor, and his wife Niki Francis who would lead in prayers as a Minister of the Uniting Church in Australia.  And of course there were also several of our colleagues from school who had already attended many of the ceremonies we have had on this cemetery. We were also pleased to see that some of them brought their sons and daughters with them for the first time. I was really pleased to see that even some of my students turned up !
And of course, there were the Leggett relatives and their host family for these days, our very good friends Dirk and Mieke Decuypere-Denys. (Dirk was the man who did the research on William Leggett and, who was, together with me, the initiator of the Leggett Memorial in Geluwe.)

photo-52

On the left : Tim and Catherine Leggett, Hamish and Grace
on the right : Mieke and Dirk Decuypere-Denys

I once more had the honour to be the master of ceremonies of this service.
This year we started with a prayer over the graves by Reverend Niki and then we had the official wreath laying by the Mayor of Harelbeke  Mrs Rita Beyaert. (The town authorities always place their wreath at the Cross of Sacrifice as on Remembrance Day they want to pay tribute to all the men who are buried in this cemetery.)

photo-61

photo-71

Then we had Last Post – silence – Ode ………After that, Grace Leggett (19) and her young brother Hamish (9) read a eulogy for their great great uncle.

photo-81

After the eulogy, we all went to the grave of William Leggett.

Flowers were presented on behalf of the Australian Embassy (“From the People and Government of Australia” said the ribbon.) This wreath was made in green and gold colours and had the big chrysanthemum balls (which in Belgium is a typical flower to honour the dead).

photo-8a

The other wreath had flowers in blue and red, the colours of Leggett’s Guards Division.  The Australian wreath was laid by Tim Leggett and Allen Bryce, the other wreath was laid by Hamish and Grace.

photo-91

Everyone who wanted, then came and laid a flower in front of the headstone or touched the headstone to pay his/her respects.  Very emotional as you saw all ages pass in front of this grave…

 photo-101

While we were standing there, we heard (on cd) Flowers of the Forest and Soldiers of Australia  (a slow march on the melody of Waltzing Matilda.)

And then… when everyone had passed the headstone, little Hamish stepped forward and tied a scarf to the headstone of his great great uncle.  The scarfs that the family were wearing on this European trip and that were knitted by Tim’s mother.  And one of these scarfs… will from now on keep ‘uncle Will’ warm here in Harlebeke !  A most beautiful and moving tribute !

 photo-112

Then everyone returned to the Cross of Sacrifice (almost at the entrance of this cemetery) and we left the Leggett family for a while at the grave of their (great) great uncle.

photo-121

Our thanks to Johan for sharing his Remembrance Day 2008, in Belgium, with us.

Remembrance Tour Pt 2

Mackay North State High School’s Remembrance 2008 Commemorative Tour saw 32 students from the school visit the Western Front Battlefields as part of their recent tour. This was reported in the 14 October RECENT NEWS item Remembrance Tour.
The culmination of the Mackay North SHS Remembrance 2008 Tour took place on Saturday 1st November when 280 people attended the official presentation evening at the Mackay North Community Hall.

The night involved the 32 tour students sharing their reflections of the tour as well as presenting grave and memorial photos to the relatives of the men commemorated on the overseas tour.

Key note speaker for the evening was Mr Doug Formby, President of the QLD RSL. Mr Formby praised the students and their endeavours in keeping the country’s wartime history alive.

A total of 115 men were honoured on behalf of families from around Australia. The photographs of 68 of these men were presented at the evening and relatives from as far away as Sydney were in attendance.

FFFAIF member, Peter Roberts, from the Gold Coast, flew to Mackay for the evening and accepted a photo of his grandfather’s name which appears on the Australian National Memorial in France.

“I have never had the chance to visit my grandfather’s memorial or the area where he was killed. The students have done something very special and it means so much to my family,” he said.

Another relative to attend was Craig Margetts from Mackay. Craig is the relative of Captain Ivor Margetts of the 12th Battalion. Ivor was killed at Pozieres and is a well know AIF identity, being the only British officer to serve unwounded at Gallipoli for the full duration of the campaign.

Tour member, Stephanie Ferguson, delivered the student address on behalf of the group and said that the tour has become a defining event in her life.

“The memories from this tour will last a lifetime. I felt such a connection with our own countrymen buried so far from Australia. It was an honour to visit them and to give them some of our time,” she said.

Tour co-ordinator, Mike Goodwin indicated to the audience that, with similar future student support, the project is set to continue and he will look to organise another school commemorative tour in 2010.
